Juxtaposition & Surprise :Weekly Photo Challenges

What is Juxtaposition? According to Word Press it is a pairing of things to show comparison and contrast. Basetet’s photo challenge is to show something that surprised you. Living in Shanghai, China just walk out the door and see examples of these themes. Such a shame that after nearly 4 yearsΒ  here less things surprise us and have become part of the everyday.

Last spring we went to Beijing to see the Great Wall. As we wandered the market area selling souvenirs to tourists we came upon this unusual pairing. Seeing someone in ancient warrior garb and another fellow in a modern suit playing a Chinese style chess game was a little surprising . A true juxtaposition… had we gone back in time or was it still 2013?

What have you seen that surprised you or was a juxtaposition? Comment on it below or follow the links to find out how to post your own photos.

Stay tuned… more on our recent Cambodia trip later this weekend.

A very interesting picture to show juxtaposition…you captured the theme perfectly in your photo. I can’t think of anything I have seen that would do the same.

    • I had forgotten about this photo until I was looking through my pictures. It was such an interesting sight though. Certainly one of those things to make you do a double take. China often has things like that to stop you in your tracks. Canada is much more boring when it comes to crazy scenes. πŸ˜‰

  10. Fun picture and great for the challenge πŸ™‚

  11. Brilliant πŸ™‚

  12. Your picture is a fabulous illustration of the WPC theme. China is a land of juxtaposition. I have a photo for this challenge, too, from China. I’ll have to dig it out.

    • It is an interesting time to be here to see all the growth and glam… then to see old traditions and ways of life within the same glance. It is getting to be less frequent now as people want more western items and police in Shanghai crack down on those bikes pilled high with reclaimed materials.
I would love to see your pic. When/where were you in China?

      • I’ve been to China 6 times over the years. 3 adoptions and three return trips. The first trip was in 1995 to Shanghai, Suzhou & Beijing. The last trip was in 2007 to Beijing, Chengde (Hebei Province), Xi’an, Suzhou, Shanghai. Over that 12 year span the change was startling.

        • I can imagine! My friend’s dad came here in the 80’s when business was just opening up and he said he wasn’t allowed out at night… things have really changed.
          What cool experience for you.

  13. Very cool! πŸ™‚

  15. Apparently, someone likes to play dress-up!
What a fabulous juxtaposed surprise! πŸ˜‰

    • I am sure it was some tourist thing… get your photo with an ancient warrior for a fee. I think I caught him on his break πŸ˜‰

      • Funny. I guess it’s like being behind the scenes of a movie being shot. It all looks real til it’s time for a coffee – or in this case, chess – break. πŸ˜‰

  16. It’s like if one of them is a time traveller. An awesome picture!

  19. LOL CTB, a wonderful capture and perfect for the challenge! Good for you for making the shot πŸ™‚

    • Thanks πŸ™‚ I forgot about it, but knew if I looked at my pics from China I was bound to find something πŸ˜‰ We were heading up to the wall, so I had my camera at the ready. I had to be fast to keep up with the group and not be asked to pay the ‘warrior’ who must have been on break πŸ˜‰
