The Liebster Award :)

I have been nominated for the Liebster Award twice over the last few weeks. I first was given this award by Patricia over at Pilot Fish back in January. Next by Billie over at Ireland, Multiple Sclerosis and Me who nominated me a few days ago. Please take a minute to check them out. Both have interesting blogs with great photos and interesting content.  Also Billie deals with MS and give tips and information on this crazy illness.

Thanks to you both. I am honoured to be given this award and before more time slips away I better get to it.

This award has 10 questions to answer. It looks like you pose the 10 questions then answer them. Since I was nominated twice I took a few questions from each nominator and answered those and then added 5 of my own instead of 10 new ones.

I decided to see what the award was for or about. Many bloggers before me tried the same thing only to come up with Liebster means dearest (or sweetest, nicest, favourite and welcome) in German. I have noticed the logo has also changed. Funny how things change and morph over time. See the old version below. I guess I have done the same on occasion to fit 😉 If you look at the badge it says “discover new blogs”. Does that mean NEW to word press or does that mean NEW to you? One thing that remains consistent is passing it along although that has varied from 3-11 blogs! The other thing is the questions. On other blogs I saw the nominated blog answer the posed 10 questions and then come up with 10 new ones for their nominees. From both of my nominations and other blogs from 2013 I see that has changed too despite rule #4. Now it looks like you answer the 10 and forward those along. Since I was nominated by 2 blogs I decided to do a little of each. I took about 5 from each of my nominators then I added 5 new ones to pass along. My nominators can then pick and choose and pass along some and make a few new questions of their own.

Here are my questions and answers:

1.  What was your first job?

Other than babysitting I started to work at a video shop as a store clerk/cashier.

2.  Why did you start blogging?

When we moved to China friends encouraged me to write about our adventures because they love my quirky way to tell stories. It was a way to keep everyone informed. I got hooked and nearly 4 years later I am still at it!

3.  What is your favorite place that you’ve ever visited?

Each place we have gone to I have loved something about it. I am always drawn to Europe for the history and architecture. Cuba and the Philippines the beach. Vietnam was interesting. More recently I fell in love with Angkor Wat area in Cambodia and hope to return there one day.

 4.  What is your favorite movie?

I love a lot of movies and lately we haven’t seen a lot. Recent ones that stand out are Bridesmaids –so funny! I also love Melissa McCarthy in Identity Thief and The Heat. They all had me laughing out loud. I really enjoy comedies. We recently watched the Book Thief only after reading the sleeve. This was a drama set during World War 2 following a young girl. It was really well done. It was sad, but so amazing.

5.  If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

When I was in high school I wrote a list of places I hoped to go one day. Well I think I went to almost all those places and more. I caught the travel bug and the list is forever growing. I guess a better question is where I DON’T want to go. 😉

6.  Are you a cat or dog person?

Cats… ever since I was little. I am sure you could guess that one 😀

7. Your favorite book?

I love the Harry Potter series. Agatha Christie are my go to books. I love the Dan Brown adventures like the Davinci Code too. Adventures and mysteries that are well done always get me.

8. If you could only eat one ice cream flavor, what would you choose? Chocolate or Strawberry?

 9. What is your favorite go-to outfit or piece of clothing that can make your day better, despite a bad hair-day?

Anything summery especially my brown linen capris or my blue silk dress I got here from a tailor.

 10. Who is your favorite literary character?

Hercule Poirot from Agatha Christie.

Liebster Blog Award

My Questions:

1.What is the worst movie you ever saw?

Wanderlust with Jennifer Anniston. I love Jennifer’s movies usually, but this was just bad. I can’t believe we watched the entire thing. This is 40 was also SO bad and I didn’t finish watching it. Who wants to see 2 hours of a couple arguing?

2. What is your favourite band or song from the 80’s or 90’s?

Anything by Duran Duran… I Melt With You by Modern English …. Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order… Love Cats by the Cure… New Orleans is Sinking by Tragically Hip….

3. e-readers (iPad/Kindle) or paperback?

I prefer the texture and the senses used while reading a paper book. I never thought I would like an e-reader. Living overseas and all the space and weight books took up in my suitcase kind of won me over to e-readers for convience. If I could I would prefer a paper copy any day though.

4. What book are you reading right now?

The 6 Sacred Stones –Matthew Reilly. I picked it up in Cambodia and it sounded interesting. It is really adventurous and action packed. I am currently half way through and not disappointed.

5. Coffee or tea?

Coffee with REAL cream… the little instant packets are just not the same, but the easiest and most available choice here in Shanghai.

The Rules if you decide to accept:

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.

2. You must answer the 10 questions given to you by the nominee before you.

3. You must nominate 10 of your favorite blogs with fewer than 200 followers and notify them of their nomination.

4. You must come up with 10 questions for your nominees to answer or you can answer the questions above.

5. Post the badge on your website for all others to see.

Rule #3 is to pick someone with less than 200 followers, but not every website has that listed, so it was hard. I decided to go ahead with my choices and pick some I haven’t nominated before.  I tried to find 10, but I have been a bad blogger lately and not exploring the blogosphere as I should. I have picked only 6 that maybe you haven’t seen before. Each one is unique and different and worth a gander.

Ninna at Words’nPics-

Debbie: a new blog that found me

Amy at World is a Book

Patchwork Ponderings for a little of this and that

Vastly Curious

StillBrewin a new blog that showed brewing in Cambodia.

Stay tuned… We just came back from a short trip to the Philippines that I will post about later. I also have more pics for the Tourist in Your Town theme RED.

I have been nominated & so have YOU!

Thanks so much for fellow Canadian Tvor Travels for the blogging award. This award is a combination of 3 awards :

I wanted to find out more about the meaning of these awards and this is what I found out…

The Best Moment Award… This award is given to a blog that has a literary piece defining a specific moment that is thought-provoking, creative, honest, and or inspiring.

The last one Semper Fidelis shows appreciation for fellow on line friends who you consider part of your ‘wolf pack’ (that is there words not mine ;))

SO now for the rules… Thank the person who nominated you and nominate 10 others. Then link back to your fellow nominator (me) to share new on-line blogging friends.

Thanks again to TVOR for the nomination. It has been a long while since I had a blogging award, so I am thankful 🙂 Check her out for great photos and stories about travel.

I am not sure if I can nominate 10, but I will try. I wish to share some new on line friends….

2012 Blog of the Year Award

Well this is long over due…I was awarded this a few weeks ago and I finally had the time to do it properly, so here we go…

Thanks to Immie over at My Bye World for nominating me for blog of the year. Immie has just changed her format and has ben posting short stories on her “Diary of a Sensitive Soul”. Check it out ! Thanks so much Immie… it means a lot to have such recognition, especially since I haven’t been blogging much lately or visiting other blogs and commenting as much as I used to.

Blog of the Year Award 1 star jpeg

Here are the rules to accept this award:

1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award
2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.
3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award – and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)
4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them
5 You can now also join our Facebook page – click the link here ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience
6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

And what is so lovely about this award is that we start with 1 star and there are 6 stars to collect in total, so each time you get nominated for *this* award – you get another star and see if you can get all 6!

As always it is hard to pick who I should nominate… I am always afraid I will forget someone who is most deserving. So fingers crossed I haven’t left anyone out here is my list:

Where’s My Backpack

This Man’s journey

My Sardinian Life

Lucid Gypsy

Practicing Simplicity

Congrats to all of you for great posts, comments, photos, ideas and joy you bring to the blogging world 🙂

Moving On!

Yes I made it into round two! Thanks so much to all of you who voted for me. Those votes helped me capture 3rd place with about 12.5% of the votes and move on. It was a far cry from Jennifer, fellow Canadian Expat Blogger at My Sardinian Life, who captured 39+% of the votes and the top blog with 41 or 42%. I am very happy to have reached the goal of making it to round 2. I can now proudly display my nomination badge on my sidebar.

The next round of voting has opened November 1st and will close December 1st. So again I ask, beg, plead, and say pretty please with a cherry on top will you vote again 🙂 Tell your friends, neighbours, co-workers and boss…. Again I am in the travel/expat blog which is the same location on the bottom lower right corner. You only get 1 vote. You can vote by clicking here.

Thanks again for voting, reading and your support of my weekly musings. Stay tuned…

Awards x 2

I was absent for awhile since we were in Cuba and didn’t have access to fast and cheap Internet. My husband and I then had to get packed, organized and take the daunting trip back to China. Truly I missed blogging and getting together in the cyberspace with my blogging friends. Imagine my joy when shortly after my return I was nominated for not one, but TWO blog awards!

Thanks so much to Meg at megtravelling for her nomination of the Beautiful Blogger Award. Also a new blog and blogging friend nominated me for the Super Sweet Award. Thanks so much to Marcella over at For Your Good Health. How ‘sweet’ of her to nominate me. Beautiful Blogger Award

This is long over due… but work kinda got in the way. Summer is almost here (or weather wise it IS here in Shanghai -hot, humid and poor air quality) and things should be winding down. For a teacher it is the last-minute assessments, paper work and report cards that fill our days, nights and pretty well every waking moment as we dream of summer vacation and see the end on the other side of the mountain of paperwork. I didn’t want to give up blogging, so I continued to participate, but didn’t have the time to sit and think about who to nominate for the Beautiful Blogger Award. Before I procrastinate any longer or another job gets in the way I want to thank Gerry over at Gerry’s Space for the nomination. My award case is filling up nicely. I am always so thrilled that someone takes the time to stop by and read my ramblings and then for someone to nominate me and say well done… well that just is the icing on the cake! It feels great and we are never too old for praise and recognition.

So a big THANKS to Gerry’s Space for following along, reading, liking and now nominating me. Again sorry it took so long to post. Check out Gerry’s blog at this link and see what he is up to. He just reached his 100th post milestone!

With each award comes some rules and this one is easy…

1. Thank the person who nominated you (Thanks again Gerry)

2. Post the award on your blog (see above)

3. Nominate 7 (or less) blogs…

I have a handful I follow and others I stop by and read on occasion. It is hard to pick some and not the same ones I have previously, so this is the hardest part because of course everyone is worthy. I would like to say thanks to all my followers, people who stop and visit and those take the time to like and comment. It is all appreciated and gives me a new place to explore, visit and learn. However I cannot nominate you all so this time I think I will nominate a few new ones I have recently found and share them. As Wanderlust says we should always “widen our circle of [ blog ] friends”.

Most of the blogs I have been reading lately all come through one of the two photo challenges that I follow and participate in. One from Word Press, the weekly photo challenge, and the other from Ailsa over at Where’s My Backpack who started the weekly travel themed photo challenge when the WP was a few days late. I love the photos, words, ideas and inspirations that all these blogs give me. They are all lovely and their kind words and encouragement have been much appreciated.

Without further ado….Drum roll please…. the nominations are:

1. Where’s My Backpack

3. Convergent Journey

4. Chronicals of Illusions (Jo Bryant)

5. Project Magellan

6. Global Anni

7. The Great Escape

Take the time to check these out! They all have incredible photos and I hope you enjoy them as much as I. Sit back and become an arm-chair traveller as you explore the world through their lens.

Stay tuned for more later this weekend…

Busy Bee

Hello everyone,

I have said a few times that I am really busy and in the middle of reports. This week I will not be posting a long and interesting post… sorry. This weekend I worked on reports all day and into the night Saturday and Sunday, except for the short break where I was required to help at a school event (and do a quick post ;)). Yes in the MIDDLE of report time. WHO plans these events??? Next week I have some event or thing almost everyday, which leaves less time for getting caught up and forget free time. I could rant and complain about the amount of work and lack of  time for days, but that is not going to help me get anything done.

Reports and Marking – a small fraction of the pile

I just wanted to take this time to say THANK YOU to all my followers, readers, LIKES, commentors  and support from everyone. It brings me great joy to know someone out there reads my ramblings and keeps coming back for more. It puts a smile on my face and gives me something to look forward to. I love thinking about the new photo challenges and sometimes I mull it over, other times know the perfect pic,  or find one by accident in the files. Writing about my time here keeps me sane and I hope it makes you chuckle or see a part of the world through my eyes.

So forgive me if I do not respond right away, or post something fancy over the next few weeks. Gerry I am sorry I haven’t followed up on the award, but I will when life returns to normal. I hope there is no expiry! As school winds down we have lots of jobs to do (besides reports) and they all seem to be due yesterday. This year seems busier with events and shorter timelines!Again WHO plans these things?

I try to check emails over coffee in the morning and even that has been hard lately since my husband has returned to Canada early… and that has become our time to Skype. Again I apologise if I fall a little behind. I fly back home for the summer and I have a long layover so I figure I can use that time to catch up on things 🙂

I will try to post for the photo challenges, but for the next few weeks there may not be any more than that. The break may be good, so I will have enough material to write about when back home where life can be so boring in comparison! So stay tuned… be back in full force in a week or two.

Kreativ Blogger Award

YIPEE! I am over the Super Moon… I was passed along another award earlier this week. It has been a busy with work and a computer course for most of my Saturday so this is the first chance I have had to post and nominate other bloggers 🙂

Well not really my first chance because as I was about to do this earlier, but instead I ended up writing about Vietnam. But in my defence the thoughts just flowed and before I realised I had typed my final installment of our Vietnam adventures… so now that I have time to reflect and nominate let’s explore this new award 🙂

The rules of this award are:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and include a link back to their blog
  • Share 7 things about yourself
  • Pass the award to 7 nominees

To Dave & Aly over at “the thought palette” for their nomination. I am truly honoured. I have been blogging almost 2 years and in the last 2 months things have exploded! I went from a few hits a week to double digits a day not to mention followers, likes and loads of comments all due to awards and encouragement from my new online friends. I appreciate your help in answering my questions, your follow and now nomination 🙂 I just don’t have the words to express thank you enough… so to steal from a speech I gave last year… hopefully one of these is enough… Merci, Grazie, Gracias, Xie Xie, Danke Schon and Muito Obrigado.

Here are my nominations:

1. Jennifer Avventura at My Sardinian Life – Jennifer nominated me twice before (my first 2 awards ever) and has inspired my writing and helped me grow as a blogger. She is also Canadian Eh… and an expat. She writes about her adventures in Sardinia, Italy. Check it out!

2. Imogen Shepard at It’s a Strange Life – I checked out this blog through the Weekly Photo Challenges and when I saw her pic of her cat with her hamster I was hooked! I had taken a similar shot years ago of Holly (cat) & Critter (hamster). Her kind words about Holly has helped my sadness, so from one cat lover to another…

3. Island Traveller – the writing is so poetic and romantic. Each blog helps you see the good in things and remind you about the simple things in life. Reading his words are inspiring and heals the soul. Island traveller also takes part in the photo challenges and shares some amazing shots.

3. Wanderlust – I did nominate this blog last time, but I enjoy reading this blog and her great outlook on life was worth another mention. Check out her beautiful photos, many of flowers right in her yard! Wanderlust has had a tough week so I hope this brightens her day and doesn’t get lost in a million emails 😉

4. The Great Escape – Amazing pictures and talk about travel. Somehow another Canadian… wait is there a pattern emerging here? We Canadians are like magnets we attract each other no matter where we are!

5. Happiest Baby in the World – I found this blog when it was Freshly Pressed a few weeks back. They are neighbours here and at home (US originally and also Expats here in China). They are living more inland China and posted about all the great things that we experience here in China. I could totally relate!

6. Til We have Faces – A few months back Lee posted the most AMAZING shots on Angkor Wat in Cambodia. It is a place we want to go and seeing the stunning images made us want to go even more. More recent posts are about living in South Korea.

7. Jo Bryant –Chronicles of Illusions Through the photo challenge I stumbled upon this blog… Lovely photos and words…

8. Third Eye Mom – who loves to travel maybe even more than me!

OK I know there are more than 7, but last time I was supposed to nominate 12 or 14 and I could not think of enough, so I am bending the rules a little ;). Since the last award I have been reading more blogs and following some great people. Check them out!

Share 7 things about myself

1. I am long winded… and I like to talk 😉 I bet you didn’t know that one.

2. I am sarcastic and have an odd sense of humour… I even call my dad from China just to tell him a good joke! But he loves them as much as me!!!

3. I love to travel, take pictures and scrapbook… I have been lucky to find a husband who also likes to get out and explore.

4. I have read a huge number of books this year (I lost count). When I was younger I would get a stack from the library and before they were due I’d go back and get another stack… I missed that. Now I don’t have the time to read that many these days but I’m trying. Does reading blogs count?

5. I watch way too much TV…  Being in China I download some shows from home, but when the internet is slow it is hard to keep up 😦 it is a source of huge frustration here and something at home we took for granted.

6. I love the sun and when it is shining I seem to come alive 😉

7. I love chocolate… my husband thinks I love it even more than him 😉

Thanks for reading, following and liking 🙂 I am truly honoured with my new-found friends and old ones who have been along for the ride. Check out these great bloggers they are worth it! Now my job is done and nominees tag your it!

Stay tuned… next time back to life in China, or maybe a photo challenge if WP posts a new one.

Versatile Blogger Award

Wow another award! I again am flattered and honoured that people out there enjoy reading my ramblings 😉 Thanks again to Jennifer for the nomination. She is another fellow Canadian from our neck of the woods and living abroad. Check out her blog too…. My Sardinian Life.

Versatile Blogger Award

Now down to business…

The Rules:

  •  Thank the person who gave you the award.
  •  Include a link to their blog in your award post.
  •  Nominate 15 bloggers/blogs for the Versatile Blogger Award.
  •  Leave a link on their blog informing them of their new award.
  •  Tell 7 things about yourself.

Thanks again to Jennifer at My Sardinian Life for the nomination.

7 Things About Me

This is going to be hard since so many friends and family read the blog, so I will try my best to tell you something new.

1. I have signed on for another 2 years in China (with the option to complete only 1 year and leave). China was never on my list of places to visit, but I think I would miss it, so we’ll give it a go for another year or 2.

2. I am a pet lover and just had to put my cat of 15 years, Holly down 😦  She was almost 16 years old and made the trip to China with us almost 2 years ago. I miss her dearly… she took ill so suddenly and there was nothing they could do.

3. I have visited 23 countries some for a few hours (or stuck on a plane) but I was still there right? For the first time my passport was worth the $87.50 and it is almost full!

4. I have gone White Water Rafting – twice. The scariest thing I ever did in my life. Getting kicked out of the boat by my own brother and coming up with the raft over top of me was my worst fear realised. Thanks Jim I saved your but a few times and this is how you repay me? 😉

5. I used to be so painfully shy that speaking in front of my class caused me to burst into tears… despite that loved acting and would enter a drama/public speaking contest every year. I forced myself to face that fear and now I do it everyday for a living! Teaching that is.

6. I was in a movie as an extra when I was in highschool, but the movie never made it to theaters after a bad opening in Europe… I never got to see the finished product 😦

7. My claim to fame… I took a picture of my nephews on the General Lee (Duke’s of Hazard car) dressed up in the cowboy gear and when my brother met  John Schneider he stopped and did a double take and said he liked the picture… and it would make a good album cover! Maybe one day… but I won’t quit my day job just yet.

OK Now on for my nominations…

1. The Convergent Journey… a travel blog all about Europe

2. Life Sucks if You Let it … fellow teacher and friend who writes about her adventures and more here in China

3. 3rd Culture Kids … a blog about Expats and their life (and food) in Brazil

4. Wander Lust Gene… blog about travel, life and a love of pets

OK I am supposed to nominate 15, but these are the main ones I follow… so I will look for more and add them later.

Once this is posted as I promised I will write more on ou trip to Vietnam.

Under Pressure

Thank you to all the new readers, followers and “likes” I have picked up over the last few weeks as a result of the weekly photo challenge and the ABC award (thanks again Jennifer). As I sit here and watch my blinking cursor flash and wait to move across the page I feel the pressure to write something smart, fun, witty, clever and entertaining enough to keep you wanting to come back to my humble blog. With new popularity comes more responsibility and pressure to write and not just ramble on…

This blog was a result of coming to work overseas and keeping in touch with friends and family. I didn’t think I could do it, but with the encouragement from Amy and Mary I decided to give it a try. Each week I would have some hits and a few comments (thanks Freda & Leslie). The response that someone ‘out there’ was reading was enough to keep me going. I now enjoy writing and try to write something funny about our travel adventures so far from home. Writing has kept me sane as things don’t go as expected and common sense is not the norm here… experiencing these frustrations just make us giggle and say “now that will make a good story for the blog !”

I just reached a few blog milestones… 90 posts and 20 likes! Now this is #2 today. I did another weekly photo contest with the theme “through” be sure to check it out 🙂

So onto this week’s musings…

When we are away from home we sometimes get baffled by how different things are and experience culture shock. Some cannot handle the differences and complain about everything and question the diversity rather than revel in the experiences and soak up the culture. For some there is no place like home, but for others seeing what is out there is what gives us energy and excitement.  My husband and I are pretty open-minded travellers and rarely if ever have we been upset about the differences we experience in travel. The most important thing travelers must pack, and many forget, is an OPEN MIND.

In China even the simple things never work all the time or as planned. It is a part of life and you get used to it. Sure it gets frustrating when you hit print and go up 1 floor to retrieve your documents only to find it not there… When you switch on the light and it doesn’t go on… you go to have a shower and the city has shut off all the water for a few hours without telling anyone… But give it time and try again and it usually works the second or third time around. There are so many things we take for granted and until it doesn’t work we forget how easy we have it back home.

There are a few things that you sometimes cannot live without. No matter how much of an open mind you have there is somethings that you cannot compromise… mine is bathrooms and facilities. Going to a public washroom here you are taking your chances. Many are those little foot rests with a hole or if you are lucky enough to get a toilet bowl, chances are it won’t have a seat. Paper – forget it… you must carry little packs of tissues with you at all times! Stores sell those little 8, 10 or 12 packs of tissues like crazy! The smell is also disgusting. It always smells like sewer. Besides that you cannot flush paper here so the discarded tissue is in a basket or garbage can beside the toilet which doesn’t help the smell. For some reason the floor is always wet… I wondered why and if you watch the toilet habits here maybe it would explain a few things. Once in a long line for the ladies toilets a mother came rushing in and decided not to wait or ask to go next. Instead she pulled her kids pants down and she went on the floor! The cleaner yelled at her, but that did not matter. No one else batted an eye… common occurences? I guess so. A friend of John’s works for IKEA here and they said parents do the same in the store. They tell them that it is NOT OK, but they say my child had to go. I guess they don’t think ahead or make their child hold it until an appropriate location can be found. Children go wherever they are …

Traditional Split Pants

Traditional Split Pants

… street, store it does not matter. This is why those split pants come so in handy! Just last week at the grocery store a dad was holding his child over a potty! It looked like a little dog water bowl… I want to know where he emptied it! John once saw a man holding his son up to a garbage can and the child was like a mini ‘fountain’. It doesn’t stop there as grownups do the same. Many taxi drivers work 12+ hour shifts and use the bushes as their urinals, some places more than others… just use your nose and you can tell where. I am sure the street vendors do the same. Now I understand the street cleaners  and big water trucks that come and hose down the roads everyday.

Another thing we take for granted is toilet paper and tissues. They are not the same as home. Tissues are so thin you can see through them so god help you when you need to blow your nose. They try to trick you with the same name brands sometimes, but they are not comparable. Itchy, scratchy sand paper just doesn’t cut it… after trial and error we finally found one that is acceptable and although we are tempted by cheaper prices, or one on sale we have learned the hard way that it just isn’t worth it.

So what thing can’t you live without when travelling?

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more…
