Spring Fresh

This week’s theme for WP is FRESH. I could use some fresh air… living in a large city which has issues with pollution it is something we all wish for. The thick smoggy air blocks out the clouds and blue skies, something most of us would take for granted. Due to smog, rain and fog over the last 7 weeks we have seen full on bright sun only 4-6 days. The less than fresh air has lead to another cold and sinus infection. Down right depressing.

As the saying goes April showers bring May flowers, where in Shanghai it must be February and March showers. The beautiful magnolia tree, outside my building, started to bud just the other day. I thought about capturing its progress and here is the first shot.

March 12th first buds. Spring is finally coming!

…..  6 days later you can tell what colour they will be. We just need some sun and warmth.

March 18th they are opening! Not long now.

Finally temperatures started to rise and become seasonal. We have also had a longer winter and over the last 4-6 weeks below average temperatures. However, change is in the air. One day this past week we even peaked at 18c a few degrees  above normal. Finally! Look what it did!

March 20th after 2 warm days they have started to open, but today is a bit chilly. Happy to stay closed a little longer.

Then today a glorious day with subtle sunshine, but 17c and I captured this. Full bloom. Fresh flowers and sunny days give me energy and lift my spirits. I am suddenly feeling re’freshed’ and have a ‘spring’ in my step.

March 22.... we did it.

March 22…. we did it.

What makes you feel energised?

Stay tuned….

Refraction: Weekly Photo Challenge

This week word press is looking for refraction, pictures to do with light. I snapped these this past summer and I think they captured the light in different and unusual ways.

Rain Rain Go Away

Rain rain go away…

Heavy rain in Hong Kong. View Looking down onto “Times Square”

I know April showers brings May flowers, but it seems every weekend for the last two months have been super soggy. Spring arrives earlier here in Shanghai than what I was used to back home in Southern Ontario. This year March was glorious. The blossoms filled the air with delicious sweet scents and the sun was shining. Then April happened. We went to Hong Kong in the middle of their ‘Black Rain’, which was a terrible storm that lasted a week. It was the worst they had in years, maybe ever. It must have been a bad omen, bad luck or hid away in our suitcases because we had terrible weather, all of April, here in Shanghai. After a mild winter many complained April turned into winter -cold, damp and grey. We didn’t see the sun for days or sometimes a week at a time. How depressing. The winds were chilly and every weekend it rained. The rain was that heavy downpour that soaks you to the skin in seconds. What is worse it is a cold rain. Brrr!

April seemed it would never end, but eventually May made its way. After the first soggy weekend in May temperatures started to rise, the sun shone for days in a row; a shock to our now sensitive eyes. Then the weekend came and it rained and again it rained some more. Our balcony is covered in water and the pinging of the heavy rain on the railing and pipes outside is constant. 14 floors up I can hear it coming down! Tomorrow is Monday and the forecast is…. sun.

Time Temptation

With a view like this doesn’t it tempt you to jump on the next plane and say forget work… ? The beach is a place where time stands still. I don’t need a watch or worry about where to be. I can just soak up the sun, swim  in the sea and revel and relax.

I wish I could go back in time and enjoy the sunny carefree days when we were in the Philippines just a month ago. As we enter our busy season at work I long for more time

Weekly Photo Challenges: Pale Colour

Word Press has set COLOUR as the theme this week while Ailsa has set PALE. I have decided to mingle the two themes since they can go hand in hand.

Instead of delving into the archives I took these photos Saturday and Sunday locally. The Easter Eggs and Orchids were taken at the Kerry Parkside Mall/Hotel here in Shanghai and the blossoms here in our apartment complex.

The mix of pale and vibrant colours are in each picture.

  • photo one: a pale pink blossom and pale weak spring sunshine
  • photo two: bright fuchsia pink blossoms against a pale baby blue sky
  • photo three: brightly coloured Easter Eggs complimented with pale pastels
  • photo four: pale white and yellow orchids set against rich chocolate brown wood

Join in the fun or see more examples by clicking the links above.

Stay tuned… next week I will post more on our trip to Beijing.

Weekly Imagine of Life: Fun Under the Sun

I am a SUN person. I love the sun and feel energized on days where the skies are blue and the sun sparkles. Needless to say I love a beach holiday. I have been lucky to go to the Philippines and Vietnam in the last 2 years and see beaches on the other side of the world. I have also seen beaches in Canada, the US, Europe (Nice in France, Narja in Spain, and another in Greece. Australia had amazing beaches and I hit many as I travelled down the coast from Cairns to Melbourne. The waters are warm, the sand is soft and the ocean still soothes the soul no matter where you go.

One of our favourite places to go is Cuba in the Caribbean. My husband and I went there for our honeymoon so it holds a special memory. After returning to university to get a degree and planning a wedding it was also a much-needed vacation. Maybe that is why is holds a special place in our hearts. The people, the music and the easy-going joyful lifestyle is also addictive. Here are my pics of Fun in the Sun.

The turquoise warm waters are a great place to relax. Ahhhhh……

I love to read on a beach chair while I listen to the waves and then jump in to cool off. My husband decided to amuse himself in other ways and first built a scuba diver and then decided he should also add a shark. Look OUT!

Shark!

It brought a lot of smiles and comments from other tourists passing by. What a great day of fun in the sun!
